The Real South
It is not rare to run into Bollywood stars at Café Madras – and we are not just talking Prabhu Deva or Vidya Balan here. Café Madras is just so good that people across the country come here for a taste of southern cuisine at its very best. The vadas have just the right degree of softness, and are best enjoyed dipped in sambhar or rasam. The onion uttapam is large enough to make a mini-meal, and fares no worse on the taste side either. Among the dosas, a good choice is the onion rava masala which is crispy and not very spicy. An essential accompaniment, and one that is critical to the cult following Café Madras enjoys, is the Gunpowder – a seasoning of various spices that only elevates the taste of that vada or dosa. The meal ought to end with the mysore paak, an exceedingly sweet dessert that has more than a generous dollop of ghee, and the ubiquitous filter coffee which is served in a steel glass standing inside a bowl – friendly to some traditional patrons who might actually prefer drinking from the bowl. Indeed, while the element of hygiene is a little less pronounced and the service a little on the slower side at Café Madras, it is the delightful culinary offerings that more than make up for that.
